Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales Review

The first Spider-Man established Peter Parker and his world. Miles Morales makes the case that Miles is more interesting. That's not a knock on Peter, it's a credit to how well Insomniac wrote Miles's situation. He's new to this, he's scared, his community is specifically under threat, and the people he's fighting both for and against are people he actually knows. That groundedness is the game's biggest strength. The conflict with the Tinkerer isn't just a supervillain plot, it's personal in a way that the first game's story only approached in its final act. Phin's motivations make sense. Miles's conflict about what to do with them makes sense. The game trusts you to sit with that moral discomfort rather than resolving it neatly. Combat-wise, Miles is a different Spider-Man to play. The Venom power, bio-electric energy, not the symbiote, allows for a charge-and-release playstyle that rewards patience differently than Peter's gadget-heavy approach. Camouflage adds a stealth option that actually fits Miles's character: a kid who disappears when overwhelmed. The two systems play off each other in ways that keep encounters feeling fresh even in the shorter campaign. The setting is a triumph. Harlem in winter, Christmas lights strung between buildings, snow collecting on fire escapes, it's gorgeous and it gives Miles's story a specific geography that makes the stakes feel real. This isn't saving New York in the abstract. This is saving his neighbourhood, his people. Nadji Jeter's performance grounds everything. His Miles is funny and anxious and genuinely kind in a way that comes through in small moments between the action beats. The honest caveat: it's about 8-10 hours long and it's priced accordingly. The map is the same map with the same activity types. If you measure games by volume you'll feel the difference from the first game. If you measure them by how much of what you played stuck with you, Miles Morales might actually win.
