Learning to Talk Through Axes
Kratos doesn't know how to be a father. He knows how to survive. He knows how to fight. He knows how to shut himself off from everything he cares about because everything he cares about eventually gets used against him. Atreus doesn't know his father at all. He sees the strength but not the grief. He sees the distance but not the reason for it. The game is about these two people learning each other through the only language Kratos speaks fluently: moving through a hostile world together. It's a character study delivered through mechanics, and it works because Santa Monica trusted the premise enough not to explain it.
